Planning to Make the Biggest Impact

The Buehrles

As the parents of five kids, Dan and Karen Buehrle know firsthand the importance of quality children’s health care, which is why they’ve included Children’s in their estate plan.

Create the future you want for your kids—that’s the philosophy guiding Dan and Karen Buehrle’s approach to family, work, and philanthropy.

In fact, their support of Children’s Wisconsin began even before they became parents. “We were looking for a way to give back, and this seemed so important,” Karen said. “Families from all over the state depend on Children’s.” Now, with their five children, the Buehrles know firsthand the peace of mind that comes from having a top-ranked children’s hospital in their own backyard.

When they were in their 30s, Dan and Karen decided to include Children’s in their estate plans. Thanks to Dan’s career at the Principal Financial Group, the couple knew that life insurance would enable them to commit to a much more significant gift than would otherwise be possible at such a young age. With just an annual premium, they established a policy that will benefit Children’s in a major way beyond their lifetime.

Their legacy gift is one of many ways the Buehrles engage with Children’s and its mission. The couple’s giving has supported a range of areas, especially Community Services programs. As a member

of the foundation’s board of directors, Dan also encourages the community’s generosity in support of Children’s. One of his goals is to inspire donors to think bigger with creative use of life insurance and other planned giving vehicles.

“When you love something, you want to protect it,” Dan explained. For the Buehrles, it’s not enough to hope that Children’s will be here for their grandkids. They want to guarantee it.
